The organisation was founded in March 2018 to create a safe space for people who are socially or politically conscious and have an interest in writing satire. It aims to promote satire as a tool for commenting on issues affecting society.

What Is Satire?
Satire is a form of writing or artistic expression that uses humour, irony, sarcasm, exaggeration or ridicule to criticise faults, behaviours, institutions or social problems.
For this competition, simply writing something funny is not enough. The work should use humour or another satirical technique to make a meaningful point or criticism.
Punocracy says judges are looking for works that creatively use wit, irony, sarcasm and/or ridicule to criticise faults.
Who Can Apply?
The competition is open to Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 30 years as of December 2026.
Applicants do not need to be university students or professional writers. The competition is primarily concerned with the quality and originality of the submitted satirical work.

- A Nigerian citizen.
- At least 15 years old.
- Not older than 30 years old.
- Within the required age range as of December 2026.
What Can You Submit?
One of the interesting features of the Punocracy competition is that applicants have considerable creative freedom.

1. It Must Be Written in English
Entries must be written in English.
2. It Must Be 500–2,000 Words
The entry must contain at least 500 words and not more than 2,000 words.
Entries outside this range may not qualify.
3. It Must Be Saved as a .doc File
The competition requires the entry to be submitted in .doc format.
Applicants should therefore prepare their work in a compatible word-processing format before submitting it.
4. It Must Be Original
The work must not have been plagiarised, either partially or completely.
Applicants should submit their own original work.
5. It Must Not Have Been Previously Published
The entry must be an unpublished work.
Do not submit a piece that has already appeared on a blog, website, newspaper, magazine or other public platform.
6. It Must Not Be Jointly Authored
Only individually created works are accepted.
Jointly authored entries are not eligible.
7. It Must Not Be AI-Generated
This is particularly important for applicants in 2026.
Punocracy expressly states that entries must not have been generated using a large language model (LLM).
Therefore, applicants should not use ChatGPT or another generative AI tool to write the competition entry.

Important: Do Not Submit AI-Generated Writing

Tips for Writing a Strong Satire
Because the competition does not prescribe a topic, applicants have considerable creative freedom.
A strong entry should ideally do more than simply make readers laugh.
Consider choosing a real issue that you understand well and finding an unusual or exaggerated way to expose its contradictions.
For example, instead of writing a straightforward article about bureaucracy, a writer could create a fictional government department whose only job is to approve applications for permission to apply for another permission.
The humour would then be used to expose the absurdity of excessive bureaucracy.
However, applicants should develop their own ideas and writing rather than copying examples or using AI to produce the competition entry.
Important Scholarship and Competition Safety Alert
Although this is a writing competition rather than a conventional scholarship, applicants should still be careful about scams.
