About the ECOWAS Startup Awards

The ECOWAS Startup Awards is a regional initiative created to discover and celebrate innovative businesses capable of contributing to economic development and regional integration in West Africa.

The 2026 edition is the second edition of the awards. The first edition was held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021.

This year's programme will bring together startups from ECOWAS countries for business development activities, masterclasses, exhibitions, pitching sessions, investor deal rooms and networking opportunities.

For entrepreneurs, the programme offers more than an opportunity to win money. Being selected can give a startup exposure to investors, policymakers, development partners and other founders from across the region.

Who Can Apply?

The ECOWAS Startup Awards is open to startups that meet the programme's eligibility requirements.

Applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an ECOWAS Member State.
  • Operate a startup that is registered and based in an ECOWAS country.
  • Have been in operation for at least two years.
  • Have a working product or service.
  • Demonstrate market traction or scalability.
  • Submit all required supporting documents.

This means the competition is not intended for individuals who only have a business idea without an operating product or service. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that their startup is already active and has potential for further growth.

Nigerian entrepreneurs are eligible to apply because Nigeria is an ECOWAS Member State.

Eligible Startup Sectors

The 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards focuses on six priority sectors.

1. EdTech and Skills Development

This category covers startups using technology and innovative approaches to improve education, learning and skills development. Examples may include digital learning platforms, education management solutions, online training platforms and technology that improves access to educational resources.

2. FinTech

FinTech startups develop technology-driven solutions for financial services. Businesses working in digital payments, financial inclusion, digital banking, financial management and related areas may fit within this category.

3. HealthTech

This category focuses on technology and innovation in healthcare. Eligible businesses may include startups developing digital healthcare platforms, health management solutions, medical technology and other technology-based approaches to improving healthcare delivery.

4. AgriTech and Food Systems

AgriTech businesses use innovation and technology to improve agriculture and food systems. This can include solutions for farmers, food production, agricultural supply chains, processing, distribution and related challenges.

5. CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation

This category is for businesses developing solutions around environmental sustainability, clean technology, climate challenges and green innovation.

6. Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech

Startups using technology and innovation to improve tourism, hospitality and travel services can apply under this category.

These six sectors reflect areas considered important to innovation, economic development and regional growth in West Africa.

What Are the Prizes?

The top three startups will share a total of $65,000.

The prize structure is:

1st Place: $30,000

2nd Place: $20,000

3rd Place: $15,000

The cash prizes are not the only benefit of participating. Selected startups will also receive opportunities for regional exposure, investor connections, networking, mentorship and a six-month post-award acceleration programme.

Participants may also receive access to digital tools and resources, including computers, accessories and software.

Other Benefits for Selected Startups

The ECOWAS Startup Awards provides founders with opportunities to connect with people who can contribute to their business growth.

Selected startups can benefit from:

  • Regional visibility across ECOWAS countries
  • Investor introductions and deal rooms
  • Business networking opportunities
  • Mentorship and technical support
  • Startup masterclasses and clinics
  • Networking with policymakers and development partners
  • Post-award acceleration support
  • Access to digital tools and resources

These opportunities can be particularly valuable for startups looking to move beyond their local market and explore opportunities across West Africa.

Documents Required

Applicants should prepare their documents before starting the online application.

The requirements include:

  • National passport or ECOWAS-approved identification of the lead founder
  • Recent passport photograph
  • Business registration certificate, where applicable
  • Two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections
  • Business plan of not more than 10 pages
  • Pitch deck of not more than 10 slides
  • One-minute pitch video

The pitch video should be submitted in MP4, MOV or WebM format and must not exceed 100 MB.

The business plan and pitch deck are particularly important because they give applicants an opportunity to explain their business model, market, innovation, growth potential and impact.

Selection Process

The selection process has both national and regional stages.

At the national stage, some startups will be selected through national nominations, while the remaining places will come through open applications submitted directly through the online portal. Therefore, entrepreneurs do not need to wait for a national nomination before applying.

A total of about 60 startups will proceed through the programme.

Shortlisted startups will participate in virtual masterclasses and startup clinics before the physical programme in Abuja.

The final stage will involve startups pitching their businesses before an independent jury made up of professionals from the business, investment and policy sectors.

How Startups Will Be Assessed

Applications will be assessed based on several factors, including:

  • Clarity of the problem and suitability of the solution
  • Innovation and originality
  • Team capacity and ability to execute
  • Market potential and scalability
  • Business model and financial viability
  • Social and economic impact
  • Alignment with ECOWAS priorities
  • Quality of the pitch and integrity of submitted information

Entrepreneurs should therefore avoid submitting a generic application. Clearly explain the problem being solved, the customers being served, how the product works, existing traction and how the business can grow.

Nigerian startups are eligible to participate in the competition, making it an important opportunity for entrepreneurs building businesses in the country's technology and innovation ecosystem.

Apart from the possibility of winning up to $30,000, selected founders can gain exposure to investors and other businesses from across West Africa.

The regional nature of the programme also makes it useful for startups interested in expanding beyond Nigeria and reaching customers in other ECOWAS markets.

Important Grant and Scholarship Safety Alert

Entrepreneurs should be careful when applying for grants, awards and other funding opportunities online.

Never provide your BVN on a grant or scholarship application form. Also, never share your ATM PIN, OTP, banking password or internet banking login details with anyone claiming to process your application.

Be suspicious of anyone who asks you to make payment for:

  • Guaranteed selection
  • Shortlisting
  • Application processing
  • Grant activation
  • Release of prize money
  • Special access to judges or organisers

Scammers can impersonate legitimate organisations and create fake application forms or social media accounts.

Do not pay anyone who promises to guarantee your selection. Always apply through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards portal and verify any suspicious communication.
